The acting Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen has given lawyers three days to apply for appointment as justices of the Supreme of Nigeria. A notice issued by Nigeria Bar Association President Mr Abubakar Mahmoud said the acting CJN asked the NBA to nominate suitably qualified legal practioners to apply for appointment as justices of the Supreme Court. The announcement confirmed speculation that the Presidency prefers to appoint the Chief Justice from outside the present crop of justices of the apex court.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima has raised concerns over the legality of removing an elected governor without constitutional backing, in what appeared to be a veiled criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s controversial ouster of Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara in March 2025. Although the National Assembly later ratified the decision, reports alleged that lawmakers were bribed by the president’s allies. Since then, a retired military general has been acting in Fubara’s place. Speaking at a book launch in Abuja on Thursday, Shettima referenced his experience as former governor of Borno State to warn against presidential overreach.
