The man's wife, a 44-year-old woman, had died suddenly of cancer just weeks earlier, on August 10

A  French widower reportedly found the rotted remains of three young children at his home while clearing the property.

The man, 41, who has not been named, called authorities after making the chilling discovery in a locked cupboard.

New website RTL reports that officers then went on to make a further grisly find with two other sets of remains inside bags, as well as two kitchen knives in a shed.

French channel BFMTV reports that the man found the first set of remains in a locked cabinet in a garage and that the other two sets of remains were discovered inside 'a locked cabinet, in a shed away from the house'.

The publication said that the remains did not appear to be from the same date period.

The man's wife, a 44-year-old woman, had died suddenly of cancer just weeks earlier, on August 10.

The chilling discoveries were made at an address in Mezeray, which is near the city of Le Mans, on Monday.

It has not been established whether the remains are those of newborns, infants, or foetuses and their advanced state of decomposition may make it impossible to determine, BFMTV reports.

It has been said that the man had been tidying up after the death of his partner and had to force the cabinet to open it.

The three bodies were also found in plastic bags, and wrapped in clothing.

The couple were said to have been childless and the woman had two children from a previous relationship, RTL reported.

Autopsies will next be carried out to determine the cause of death of each child and an investigation is under way.

No hypothesis is said to have been ruled out by investigators.
