ONDO IFAD/ĹIFE-ND ESTABLISHES WOMEN IN AGRIC NETWORK (WIAN-ND) TO FORM A FORMIDABLE UNITED FRONT TO CHAMPION WOMEN RURAL ECONOMIC GROWTH.
Ondo State IFAD/Life-nd Office has established the Women in Agriculture Network (WIAN-ND) in the State with the aim of giving women a united umbrella on Agriculture challenges and opportunities.
The program which held in Akure the State capital was attended by women drawn from various sectors of the economy with emphasis on Agriculture business.
In his message to the event, the State IFAD/Life‐nd Project Coordinator, (SPC), Prince Olawale Ademola said creating of the network was necessitated by the need to make the women have a united voice.
Prince Ademola, whose message was delivered by Mr. Akin Oluwalade, Environment and Climate Change specialist, IFAD/LIFE-ND, explained that WIAN-ND would be an advocacy body that would facilitate enlightenment of women on how to access agricultural inputs and funds with a view to enhancing their outputs.
"In line with the overall goal of IFAD/LIFE-ND Project to realize transformed economy in which the rural population can derive equal benefits, Ondo State IFAD/LIFE-ND is establishing Women-In-Agriculture Network -Niger Delta (WIAN-ND).
Establishment of the network became necessary to help enhance women participation in chains of agribusiness."
Mrs. Bola Akinyede, the State Rural Institution and Gender Officer, IFAD/LIFE-ND, explained that the network is targeting at transforming rural economy for equal benefit of the citizenry irrespective of their gender.
According to her, “Women in Agriculture Network – Niger Delta (WIAN- ND) is being established today in Ondo State to enhance reduction in persistent gender inequality, and poverty.
“The effective functioning of the institution will also lead to economic growth and improved quality of life, sustainability of Project impacts/gains in Project Communities, implementation of IFAD strategic framework and strengthening of rural institutions and rural development in the state.”
The women were later organised into four groups by the resource person, Mr. Olorunfemi Samson. Each group was given a women Agriculture related challenge to deliberate upon and proper possible solutions. A pokesperdon delegated by each of the groups later presented their report to the whole house.
The network elected a six member executive to pilot and organise them into a formidable squad that will champion their cause.
