 Government Stresses Importance of Breast milk for Children as  Ondo State Celebrates Commencement of World Breastfeeding Week .

Ondo State on Friday joined the rest of Nigeria and the International Community in the celebration of 2024 World Breastfeeding Week.

In a message to the event, held at the International Event Centre,  The Dome, in Akure, the First Lady, Mrs. Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa emphasized the critical importance of initiating breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and maintaining exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
The wife of the Governor, who was represented by Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Lola Fagbemi, reiterated that workplaces in the state are being adapted to support nursing mothers, highlighting the state's commitment to providing conducive environments for breastfeeding.
She noted that Ondo State places significant priority on maternity leave for nursing mothers and also allows men a one-month leave to support their breastfeeding spouses.


The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, who spoke on the theme of the celebration, underscoring the health benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. He announced a reward system to encourage mothers to practice exclusive breastfeeding and to regularly visit health centers for their children’s immunizations.
Dr. Francis Adegoke Akanbiemu from the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Board reaffirmed that breastfeeding is a vital strategy for child survival and urged mothers to adopt exclusive breastfeeding practices to ensure their children’s good health.


Representatives from various organizations, including the WHO, UNICEF, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, and Rotary International, Dr. Toyin Adeyalo-Ogundare echoed the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding in their speeches. WHO representative Dr. Adebayo Ibrahim, on behalf of the State Representative Dr. Dele Davis, and the National President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Prof. Wasiu Afolabi, were among those who spoke.

Highlight of the event was the distribution of support kits to all nursing mothers in attendance, reinforcing the state’s commitment to promoting and supporting breastfeeding practices.

Another noteworthy achievement saw Nigeria create a world record for most women breastfeeding simultaneously and Ondo State contributed a total of 525 women.
