Celebrating a Born Leader on his birthday: Prince Leke Adegbite, Chairman of Ondo State NUJ Council"
Every living being is imbued with certain characteristics and gifts, commonly referred to as talents. Each of us is given opportunities to showcase these talents whenever and wherever we can. One of these gifts is the ability to lead. Those who possess it naturally find leadership roles easy to embrace. Unfortunately, many traverse the world without fully utilizing their God-given talents, leaving no mark on the sands of time.
Today marks the birthday of Prince Leke Adegbite, the Chairman of the Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ). Although relatively young, fate has placed him in a position to guide a vibrant union. Any leadership role within the NUJ, whether at the Chapel level or State level, is not for the faint-hearted. Some chapels are even known for frequent impeachments of their chairpersons. Leading the State Council, therefore, is no small feat.
I didn't know Prince Leke personally until he became Secretary of the Union. In the two and a half years since he assumed the role of Council Chairman, he has shown a solid understanding of what it means to lead. His style of leadership reflects maturity, accommodation, friendliness, firmness, and wisdom beyond his years. When complex issues arise, he draws on native intelligence and wisdom to resolve them effectively.
Prince Leke combines the boldness of Oba Rotimi Obamuagun with the empathy of Dele Atunbi, two former Union leaders who left lasting legacies. His approach to running the Council reflects the qualities of a natural leader. This leadership talent should be no surprise; he is a Prince of Ikare Akoko and spent his early childhood in the Owa Ale palace.
One of his significant achievements has been uniting formerly opposing factions within the Union. Under his leadership, social life at the Press Center has been revived—an accomplishment many of us deeply appreciate.
I once learned a key insight into his effective leadership. He shared, "I had been preparing for NUJ politics long before I joined it. There was a time when close friends kept me updated on Union activities in their media houses." His preparation and dedication are clear in his work.
Today, under his leadership, the NUJ enjoys greater respect and recognition in society. From the state government to security agencies, journalists are accorded the respect they deserve, and the Union has become a respected and responsible pressure group.
I wish Prince Leke Adegbite, the comrade and leader, a joyful birthday celebration. May his success continue
