Ondo State Sets Focus on Food Security and Budget Implementation for 2025
This commitment was announced by the State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan, Ph.D., during a Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and 2025 budget planning session. The engagement, held in Akure, the state capital, gathered representatives from Akure North, Akure South, Ifedore, and Idanre local government areas, along with trade unions, professional bodies, civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), NGOs, and other stakeholders.
Dr. Igbasan outlined various strategies, including improving security in farming communities, acquiring more tractors, enhancing farm yields with modern agricultural techniques, and making rural roads more accessible.
Represented by Mr. Bamidele Daisi, Administrative Secretary of the Economic Planning and Coordinating Office, Dr. Igbasan also addressed the challenges the government faced in executing the 2024 budget. Price volatility, driven by rising inflation, required a budget revision from N395.257 billion to N492.045 billion to better reflect current economic conditions and support a new minimum wage for workers.
He acknowledged that many contractors experienced delays due to increased construction costs but reassured the public that contractors would resume work on various projects across the state soon.
Following Pastor Stephen Aworere’s presentation on the proposed 2025-2027 MTEF, traditional leader Oba Ajomole Kayode Ojogburiaka of Ilado suggested that the state allocate funds to revive state-owned industries, create jobs, and boost internal revenue. He also proposed the acquisition of Heritage Bank to expand banking access in rural areas and called for the deployment of more teachers in rural schools.
Community leader Pastor Olorunsola Olafisoye, representing the Owa of Idanre, urged the government to promote cottage industries and support local processing of agricultural products like cocoa, which could enhance revenue generation from the agricultural sector.
Chief (Mrs.) Nike Aroloye, the Iyaloja of Ondo State, advised the government to collaborate with market women to control rising food prices. Represented by Mrs. Dauda Aderemi, she noted that limiting the role of market leaders in price regulation had led to price inflation in local markets.
The Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget continues to consult with stakeholders statewide to shape the 2025 budget based on prioritized community needs.
