Ondo State Reviews Motorcycle and Tricycle Ticket Prices

Ondo State Reviews Motorcycle and Tricycle Ticket Prices

The Ondo State Government has announced a revised ticket pricing structure for motorcycle and tricycle riders across the state, following a consensus with representatives from all 18 local government areas.

During an interactive session at the Revenue House in Akure, the Acting Chairman of the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service (ODIRS), Mr. Bayo Rojugbonkan, revealed the adjustments. The daily ticket price for motorcycles has been increased from ₦150 to ₦500, while tricycles will now pay ₦1,000, up from ₦300.

Rojugbonkan explained that the revision was necessitated by the rising cost of ticket production, which had become unsustainable. He also emphasized that a comparative analysis of ticket prices in other South-Western states informed the decision. According to him, states like Ekiti charge ₦850, Osun ₦700, Edo ₦1,200, Lagos ₦1,300, and Oyo ₦1,200, making Ondo’s revised rates the lowest in the region.

“The new ticket price of ₦500 per day is the lowest compared to other South-West states. This revised price will take immediate effect for the benefit of all riders across the 18 local government areas,” Rojugbonkan stated.

He assured that the additional revenue generated would be invested in developing critical sectors across the state.

Government Pledges Support for Riders

Speaking at the session, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Strategy, Comrade Gani Muhammed, praised the riders for their continued cooperation with the state government. He noted that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had prioritized their welfare by elevating the oversight of riders to an Executive Council member.

“Previously, the riders were overseen by a Senior Special Assistant, but now the office is handled by a Special Adviser who is part of the Executive Council. This arrangement ensures that issues concerning riders are presented directly to the Governor without intermediaries,” Muhammed explained.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of riders and ensuring their voices are heard in policymaking.

Riders Support the Review

The Coordinator of Tricyclists in Akure South and North, Mr. Olawale Atanbiakin, welcomed the upward review, describing it as long overdue. He reassured the public that the new ticket prices would not lead to an increase in transportation fares, as adjustments had already been made before the review.

“We had already adjusted transportation fares from ₦150 to ₦300 in areas like Ijoka and Oda Road while the ticket price was still ₦150. Now that the ticket price has been increased, it will not have any negative impact on the public,” Atanbiakin clarified.

The new ticket prices are effective immediately, with the government urging all riders to comply as part of their contribution to the state’s development.
