Russia Increasrs Scholarships for Nigerian Students, Seeks Deeper Cultural Ties
Russia has proposed increasing its annual scholarship quota for Nigerian students from 220, pending further discussions with Nigeria’s Ministry of Education. This offer was made during a meeting held on Thursday in Abuja between the Russian Embassy and Nigeria’s Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy. The engagement focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, especially in youth development through the creative industries, cultural exchange, and broader economic collaboration.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa stressed the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s youthful population—70 per cent of whom are under 30—by using culture and creativity to tackle global challenges such as youth unemployment, economic hardship, climate change, education, and mental health. She emphasised the role of the creative and cultural sectors in creating sustainable opportunities for young Nigerians.
Russian Ambassador A.L. Podelyshev extended an invitation to Nigeria to participate in the Kazan Cultural Fair in November 2025 and proposed the reactivation of a two-year-old memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cultural cooperation. He also expressed Russia’s interest in promoting cultural exchange by facilitating visits between Nigerian and Russian artists. The ambassador pledged support for preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage through digital technologies such as 3D scanning and virtual reality, and revealed that the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts seeks collaborative theatre programmes and training with Nigeria.
The Nigerian side proposed including creative economy and audiovisual co-productions in future bilateral agreements. Both parties agreed to pursue concrete actions, including the appointment of focal persons and defined timelines for follow-up. The Russian Embassy confirmed it is awaiting Nigeria’s proposals on key cooperation areas, expressing mutual readiness to advance the MOU and implement cultural, creative, and tourism-related initiatives.
