Ondo, NERC, TCN, NISO Partner to Boost Power Supply
The Ondo State Government has partnered with key players in Nigeria’s power sector to address electricity challenges in the state and complete the long-stalled Owode Substation project in Akure.
The State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. (Dr.) Johnson Alabi, led a delegation to a high-level meeting in Abuja with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
A Press Release by Debbie Funmilayo, the Ministry's Press Officer, says the meeting focused on the Owode 330/132/33 KVA substation project, which has remained dormant for years. According to the Commissioner, Ondo State currently receives less than 30 megawatts of electricity, compared to the estimated demand of 700 megawatts.
“This situation makes it urgent for government to step in. Completing the Owode substation will be a game changer in electricity supply for our people,” Engr. Alabi said. He added that the state is prepared to support TCN in ensuring the project is delivered.
The Vice Chairman of NERC, Musiliu Oseni, described the discussions as necessary and expressed optimism that they would lead to positive results after years of delay.
Similarly, NISO’s Executive Director, Engr. Shehu Aliyu, explained that progress had been hindered by right-of-way issues, but assured that efforts were ongoing to resolve them. He revealed that plans were underway to finalize agreements with contractors and secure necessary approvals from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
He commended the state government’s renewed commitment, stressing that the project would significantly benefit Ondo State once completed.
At the end of the meeting, it was resolved that the Ondo State Government would make a formal request for detailed information on the project and requirements needed for its completion.
