Aiyedatiwa Charges Stakeholders On New Innovations in Tax Collection

EU Tax Club Dinner: Aiyedatiwa Charges Stakeholders On New Innovations in Tax Collection

Stakeholders have been called upon to brainstorm on new innovations and approaches towards the collection of taxes.

Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, made the call at the Elizade University (EU) Tax Club Dinner tagged 'Evening Deduction 2024' held at the State Internal Revenue Learning Center, Akure, the state capital.

Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prince Olusegun Omojuwa, commended the organizers of the Elizade University Tax Club Dinner, saying the event will educate Nigerians on the importance of paying taxes to the government.

Aiyedatiwa said despite the current economic situation in the country, the government should still find ways to generate tax revenue for the development of the state and the country.

While reiterating the need to find new approaches and innovations on how to collect taxes, he said it must be done according to the features of taxation, which must be convenient for taxpayers.

According to him, "Tax is very critical to national development. For this reason, tax is made legal and compulsory by the constitution. It is to a country as blood is to the human body."

"This event further reminds us of our commitment to effective tax collection and administration and also creates awareness among taxpayers on the importance of their obligation to the government."

The governor commended the management of Ondo State Internal Revenue Services (ODIRS), saying the state parades a tax authority that is well-structured, focused, and result-oriented.

"We have an ODIRS that is doing well, and I must commend its management and staff," he said.

The Chairman of Ondo State Internal Revenue Services (ODIRS), Dr. Tolu Adegbie, expressed the need for the government at all levels to diversify, saying over-reliance on oil will not do the country any good.

Adegbie, represented by Director of Personal Income Tax (DPIT), Mr. Oluwasegun Enikuomehin, urged the Elizade University Tax Club to focus more on the practical aspects of tax and taxation.

Adegbie said, "We are raising young tax professionals who will be able to start from the beginning.

"Even at home, they will be able to inform their parents and friends about the importance of tax payment."

The President of the Elizade University Tax Club, Olaoluwumi Jimoh, expressed her gratitude to God Almighty for the success of the event, saying it was fulfilling being the president of the club.

She added that taking tax law afforded her the opportunity to understand the importance of taxation and what it means in an economy.

According to her, "There is no reason to deny that a lot of problems are facing tax collection, which include tax evaders, avoiders, and others.

"But I hope that I will be able to contribute to solving problems associated with tax payment in the country in the future", he stated.
