Millionaire homeowners try to evict homeless man living in a CAVE for spoiling their waterfront views of world-famous beach
- Homeless man living in an ancient cave at exclusive Mount Drury Reserve next to world-famous NZ beach
- The Maori man, 64, set up camp in an old rock cave opposite a street of sprawling multi-million dollar homes
- Homeowners unsuccessfully enlisted one of NZ's top politicians to evict him - but local authorities let him stay
A man hiding out from the Covid pandemic has set up home in one of the world's most famous beaches - but some locals aren't happy.
The Maori man, known only as Awhi, started living in an ancient cave across the road from wealthy homeowners at Mount Drury Reserve at the New Zealand beach town Mount Maunganui in early 2020.
Awhi's ramshackle home, which is nearby homes worth multi-millions, is visible from the exclusive, sprawling homes along Pacific Avenue.
Awhi told stuff.co.nz that while his cave home looks 'grim', it was just 'somewhere to stay warm', stuff.co.nz reported.
He said: 'There’s a lot of other people in the world today that are worse off than I am. Who am I to complain?'
