Former JAMB Registrar, Ojerinde Seeks Out-of-Court Settlement in N5.2 Billion Fraud Trial
Federal High Court in Abuja has heard that former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde, is seeking an out-of-court settlement in his ongoing N5.2 billion fraud trial. Ojerinde, who is being prosecuted by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), is facing an 18-count charge relating to alleged financial misconduct.
During the resumed hearing on Wednesday, Ojerinde’s counsel, Eteya Ogana, informed the court that both parties were exploring an administrative resolution of the matter. “We shall be asking for a long date after vacation to enable us to report same,” Ogana told the court. Counsel to the ICPC, Lesie Iheduru, did not oppose the request and confirmed that reconciliation discussions were ongoing.
Presiding Judge, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, had earlier ruled on a no-case submission filed by the defence, holding that the ICPC had presented sufficient evidence to require Ojerinde to enter a defence. The judge noted that the testimonies and exhibits presented established key elements of the offences alleged.
Following the latest development, the court adjourned the matter to October 20 for either a report on the out-of-court settlement or for the defence to open its case if reconciliation efforts fail. The judge emphasized the need for progress in the matter, which has spanned over two years.
In 2022, a similar attempt to reach a plea bargain between Ojerinde and the ICPC collapsed. The commission had accused the former registrar of multiple counts of fraud allegedly committed while he served as head of both the National Examinations Council (NECO) and JAMB.
Ojerinde was arraigned in July 2021 on allegations of abuse of office and diversion of public funds amounting to N5.2 billion. He has consistently maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges brought against him.
